A Powerful Skin Healer
Cosmetics and beauty industry are always striving to bring the best and most useful products to their customers. In that terms, the industry is focusing more on the ingredients that can be found "right out there" – in nature.
It is well-known that nature offers things that cannot come in comparison with their chemical versions. Not to mention the benefits!
One of the lesser-known but very efficient plants that are currently experiencing a boom in the cosmetics and beauty industry is the New Zealand native - Kawakawa.
Its healing properties date back to the ancient civilizations.
Today's modern techniques are looking to incorporate this plant into products specifically designed to heal and treat different skin conditions.
The bright green heart-shaped leaves of Kawakawa (Macropiper exelsum) are a distinctive presence in the New Zealand bush, and Kawakawa’s medicinal properties are equally distinctive. Traditionally used by Maori not only as a medicine but also as a significant part of many ceremonies, Kawakawa is an important part of both the physical and spiritual worlds and revered for its innate power.
Kawakawa is an entire plant pharmacy in itself, capable of many different actions that make it useful for a wide array of conditions. The variety of active constituents in Kawakawa make it a complex and powerful medicine, but one that is readily accessible.
Kawakawa in the skincare industry
Kawakawa is a bushy plant. Its healing properties lie inside its leaves. Māori have used it for many different reasons since they saw all the good it does to the body and the overall well-being.
The skincare and the beauty industry have significantly turned towards Kawakawa particularly because of its two main properties: ability to reduce inflammation, redness and its anti-microbial action.
Inflammation, irritation, and redness. Whether you decide to use the leaves of Kawakawa directly or buy a product that is based and rich in Kawakawa extract, the results you achieve will be stunning.
Inflammation, irritation, and redness are some of the most common skin conditions men and women face throughout their life. Each skin type is different, it reacts differently towards the weather conditions and pollution. Every environmental change affects the skin.
Redness can be a clear sign that something is happening inside the body which should be addressed right away. Kawakawa applied topically soothes the skin and can visibly reduce inflammation caused by different skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and skin rashes.
Anti-microbial properties. Kawakawa's antimicrobial and analgesic properties make it useful for treating infections, and it is helpful in reducing inflammation of various skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and rashes. It is also antidyspectic (counters dyspepsia or indigestion) and antispasmotic (eases muscle spasms or cramps), so it makes an excellent digestion aid.
Acne and skin scars/bruises. Among the many skincare healing properties, Kawakawa is also used for the treatment of acne, dermatitis, scars, and bruises. Myristicin, one of two known bioactive molecules present in kawakawa, is anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. This means that it is incredibly soothing and healing for damaged or broken skin.
Dermatitis. Kawakawa has been used to care for eczema and sensitive, dry and irritated skin by Máori healers for generation upon generation and there is no doubt that for those suffering from eczema, psoriasis, rashes or dermatitis, Kawakawa Balm can soothe or resolve the symptoms, and provide lasting relief.
And this is just a tiny taste of what Kawakawa is capable of! Like many of New Zealand native plants, Kawakawa is entirely unique and a powerful addition to our herbal pharmacy.
